Memories

                                                                                                                                           Sept 5, 1955
Dear Mother,
Today is Labor Day, and we spent the early morning hours cleaning the basement, & clipping & watering the lawn.  At 10 A.M. we took off for Boulder Canyon where we are now.  We are going to cook our dinner outside.  We have just stopped by the stream for the children to romp a bit.
A week ago when Harold was off work we left on Thurs. morn. and went down to the Royal Gorge which is just a deep canyon with a bridge across it, and a river & rail road running thru the bottom.  It was a beautiful sight, but it is just a money making scheme for someone.  It cost us nearly $5.00 to go across it.  Later Thurs. afternoon we went down to Pueblo to the State Fair.  We have lived in Colo. nearly 11 years and never been to the State Fair.  It was quite an experience for the children.  They saw all the animals & exhibits etc.
We went on Thurs night to Trinidad and got there at 9:30 P.M.  We left Fri morning at 8:30 and traveled to Mesa Verde National Park.  It took us until 7:00 P.M. Fri to get there.  We didn’t realize it was so far away.  We slept out under the stars at the park campground, and we couldn’t have asked for a lovelier night.  At 8 A.M. Sat we started on tours of the ruins. It is amazing how those people build houses on the sides of the clifts.  We were told that the people who built them were forced to build there to protect themselves from warring tribes.  They say they were built a thousand years ago.  I wondered as we were there if they weren’t built by the Nephites in an effort to protect themselves from the Lamanites in the last days of their existence.  In all those ruins they still maintain that those people came to America across the Bering Strait down thru Alaska etc.

I’ve been getting this letter written 3 different times.  Yesterday This morning and now tonight and it is 10 P.M.  I have just filled out the 3 youngest children’s papers they need to register at school tomorrow, and I’m ready to go to bed.  We put up a bu. of tomatoes we bought in Longmont yesterday, and picked some beets etc.
Br & Sis Dunn are going to take their daughter over to the B.Y.U. on about the 17th of Sept. and will be coming back the 19th or 20th.  They said they would be happy to have you ride back with them if you could come.  You met Sister Dunn in June.  She was one of them that stayed in LaNeta’s trailor.  I must get to bed.  Will you let me know if you can come.  We would be so happy to have you.
                                                         Lovingly, Laura
